The Yurúa Community Conservation Association (ACC-Yurúa), with technical support from Upper Amazon Conservation (UAC), has begun drafting a proposal to register its Conservation Concession as an Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measure (OECM) with the Ministry of the Environment (MINAM). This work is being carried out in accordance with MINAM’s established guidelines and within the framework of the Sustainable Landscapes of the Amazon – ASL2 project.
Registration as an OECM would enhance national and international visibility and formal recognition of the conservation efforts led by the Indigenous association, together with its allies, across more than 45,668 hectares of forest in the district of Yurúa, Ucayali.
The proposal includes the preparation of the technical dossier required by MINAM’s General Directorate of Biological Diversity (DGDB). This dossier encompasses a range of actions, including an analysis of the legal and organizational framework of the concession; the compilation and assessment of biological studies conducted between 2019 and 2025; the implementation of recommendations arising from OSINFOR inspections; the updating of the Management Declaration (DEMA); and boundary demarcation and signage within the concession area.

If validated by MINAM, the proposal may be submitted for inclusion in the World Database on Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (WD-OECM), administered by the United Nations Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC).
In the coming months, ACC-Yurúa and UAC will work closely with the ASL2 project team, managed by Profonanpe, as well as with specialists from MINAM’s General Directorate of Biological Diversity (DGDB), to strengthen and consolidate the proposal for evaluation and validation by the national authority.
Granted in 2019, the ACC-Yurúa Conservation Concession represents a strong model of community-based land management, contributing to the protection of watershed headwaters, the conservation of primary forests, and the long-term preservation of Amazonian biodiversity.
