Protecting the Forests and Indigenous People of the Upper Amazon

Empowered Indigenous Tribes

We partner with Indigenous communities and their federations to promote sustainable and profitable livelihoods and strengthen stewardship of their lands and adjacent protected areas. We pride ourselves on the time spent in the most remote parts of the Amazon headwaters, working tirelessly to protect the forests and way of life of the settled and isolated indigenous peoples who live there.

How we do it

We work through several multifaced strategies such as:

  1. Gateway Communities Initiative

  2.   Sustainable livelihood approaches

  3. Indigenous land titling

  4.   Monitoring Protected areas

  5.   Raising awareness

Impacts

Over the past 20 years, our work has delivered many important and impactful outcomes, these are a few of our many highlights:

  • X number of communities supported in securing land titling

  • X number of conservation and non-timber concessions supported in creation

  • X numbers of hectares protected

In focus

Progress in the land titling of Alto Esperanza on the Inuya River

UAC supports the land titling process of the Alto Esperanza Indigenous community on the Inuya River, strengthening its legal recognition and territorial security mechanisms. This work brings together technical and community-based actions to guarantee land rights in the face of external pressures and threats to Indigenous governance.

UAC technical support to the implementation of Alto Tamaya-Saweto communities ‘Life Plan’ objectives

UAC supports the Alto-Tamya Saweto Indigenous community’s life plan, strengthening territorial protection, community organisation, conservation, and sustainable livelihoods. More than a decade after the murder of four territorial defenders, implementing this plan remains a vital tool to protect the territory and sustain community life

Final Statement

UAC champions environmental protection and human rights by standing with Indigenous communities safeguarding their ancestral lands and advancing conservation in some of the worlds most vulnerable ecosystems. Through partnership, advocacy and action, UAC strengthens community power, protects critical landscapes and ensure those most effected have voice, agency and authority to shape their own future.
